Once your baby has seen the light and the uterus is completely clear of childbirth, the postpartum period begins. It lasts for 6 weeks, which is related to the complete restoration of the mucosal layer of the uterus.
What happens in this period in the body, what dangers await you, what rules to follow? Let’s find answers to questions together.
Changes in a woman’s body.
During this period, all organs and systems are reconstructed and returned to their prenatal sizes and functions. Certain changes remain in the cervix, vagina, perineal muscles, anterior abdominal wall, and mammary glands.
The most remarkable processes occur in the reproductive organs.
After birth, the weight of the uterus is approximately 1000 g, but at the end of the second week it weighs approximately 300 g, and at the end of the fourth, it reaches prenatal size, and in lactation it becomes even smaller.
Mucosal layer of the uterus (endometrium)
The restoration of the endometrium occurs fairly quickly, 7 to 10 days after birth. The only exception is placental site (placenta insertion site).
His complete healing occurs at the end of the 6th week.
The tone of the pelvic floor muscles, the perineum and the vagina.
These muscles are gradually restored, but not always completely. The folding of a vagina is restored the third week, its volume is reduced, the swelling disappears, abrasions and breaks are cured.
The function is restored in the first weeks, the follicles begin to mature. As a general rule, the first menstruation is anovulatory: the follicle matures, but its inverse development occurs, there is no ovulation, the corpus luteum, respectively, is not formed either.
Little by little, the menstrual cycle is restored. Remember, if the baby is not breastfed regularly, skips the nocturnal feeds: the probability of ovulation and, consequently, the beginning of pregnancy is high.
Menstruation can come back to you as early as the eighth week after birth, but it may not be the entire active period of breastfeeding.
Anterior abdominal wall
To accommodate the growth of the uterus, the abdominal muscles disperse, separate. Immediately after giving birth, for most women everything seems deplorable: folds, stretch marks, a huge protruding belly.
But with the proper efforts, the implementation of minimal exercises, the muscle tone approaches the prenatal level, the stretch marks become pale and become less noticeable.
The apogee of its function comes only in the postpartum period. In the maternity hospital, colostrum is excreted from the breast in the first days.
And after 2-3 days (after caesarean section a little later), milk production begins. How much you can breastfeed depends on your desire and the work of the hormones. The duration of breastfeeding is strictly individual.
Only about 8% of women in the world can not breastfeed for reasons that are not treatable.
If the delivery was normal, the woman should feel good. Of course, fatigue, loss of strength, a certain decrease in mood may occur, but the mission he has performed was not easy.
The first two hours after delivery will simply not allow you to rest: every 15 minutes an inspection will be made, the palpation of the uterus, with the aim of early detection of postpartum complications.
In the next 12 hours, the medical staff per hour will control the amount of secretions, uterine contractility.
Body temperature on the first and third days may increase slightly. On the first day, this reaction is associated with an overload of energy during delivery, and on the third day may be due to lactostasis.
But at the same time, the numbers on the thermometer should not be high, and the general condition should not suffer, otherwise a full examination and examination of the woman is necessary.
Postpartum pain Normally, a woman feels contractions for several days after giving birth, which helps the uterus to reduce its previous size.
Sometimes, after a rapid delivery, or when the uterus is elevated, certain changes in the tissues that cause pain occur and must stop on the third day.
Piglets – secretion of the uterus after childbirth. They are a mixture of non-viable rejected cells of the mucous layer and the blood.
Immediately after delivery, the discharge is dominated by blood, then their character changes, they become poorer and acquire a slimy character.
Hemorrhoids The stress that occurs during childbirth can lead to the expansion of hemorrhoidal veins, the formation of nodes.
If the condition is not transmitted on its own, it is necessary to contact a surgeon for help.
Cryotherapy To prevent bleeding and improve uterine reduction, all women after delivery in the stomach extend a bladder with ice. Before use, it should be wrapped with a cloth.
Being in the hospital, do not reject this procedure, it is one of the most affordable and effective ways to improve the tone of the uterus.
No matter how difficult it may be, but if the birth went through the birth canal without complications, it should be lifted in 4-5 hours. This approach is aimed at preventing hypotension of the uterus, bladder, intestines and blood clots.
Within two hours after delivery without complications, it is possible to eat through the birth canal, the stocks made in an alarming suitcase will be very useful here. The woman does not need a special diet, but it is worth remembering that now everything she eats will go to the baby with milk, so the food must be full and hypoallergenic.
To restore the muscle tone of the perineum and the front abdominals, it is necessary to perform a series of physical exercises from the second day after birth, while in the maternity hospital.
Already on the second day you should take a shower and perform the procedure daily. Special attention must be paid to the organs directly related to the birth.
It is recommended that the mammary glands be washed daily with warm water and soap. Be sure to use a special, comfortable and matched bra size.
External genitalia should be washed 4-5 times a day.
At 4-6 days they make an extract of mother and baby at home. If the delivery was good and the postpartum period is favorable, you can be discharged earlier.
Within 2 weeks after birth, you should visit your gynecologist.
It is recommended that sexual life begin not earlier than 6 weeks after childbirth (it was previously indicated that it is precisely at this time that the endometrium is epithelialized). Birth control pills can be taken after 3 weeks, intrauterine contraceptives are allowed after one month (after a cesarean section – 2 months).
